يستعد وزير الخارجية الأمريكي ماركو روبيو، لعقد لقاء مع البابا ليو في الفاتيكان، اليوم (الخميس)، في اجتماع يُتوقع أن يشهد أجواءً حساسة، على خلفية الانتقادات الحادة التي وجهها الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب أخيرا لبابا الفاتيكان بسبب موقفه من الحرب على إيران.
ومن المقرر أن يصل روبيو، الذي يشغل أيضًا منصب مستشار الأمن القومي الأمريكي، إلى القصر الرسولي في الفاتيكان صباح الخميس، في أول لقاء يجمع البابا بمسؤول من إدارة ترمب منذ نحو عام.
وأفادت وكالة رويترز عن مصادر دبلوماسية، بأن الاجتماع المغلق سيستمر نحو نصف ساعة، يعقبه لقاء آخر بين روبيو والكاردينال الإيطالي بيترو بارولين، المسؤول الدبلوماسي الأبرز في الفاتيكان.
خلافات متصاعدة بين ترمب والبابا
ويُعرف البابا ليو، أول بابا أمريكي في تاريخ الكنيسة الكاثوليكية، بمواقفه المنتقدة للحرب الأمريكية-الإسرائيلية على إيران، إضافة إلى اعتراضه على سياسات الهجرة المتشددة التي تتبناها إدارة ترمب.
وخلال الأسابيع الأخيرة، صعّد ترمب هجماته العلنية ضد البابا، في خطوة أثارت انتقادات واسعة من قادة دينيين ومسيحيين من مختلف التيارات السياسية.
وكان الرئيس الأمريكي قد صرّح، الاثنين، بأن بابا الفاتيكان يعرّض الكثير من الكاثوليك للخطر بسبب معارضته للحرب، كما اتهمه بشكل غير مباشر بالتساهل تجاه امتلاك إيران للسلاح النووي.
لكن البابا ليو نفى هذه الاتهامات بشدة، مؤكدًا أن رسالته تقوم على الدعوة إلى السلام ورفض الأسلحة النووية بشكل قاطع.
وقال البابا في تصريحات للصحفيين: «مهمة الكنيسة هي الدعوة إلى السلام، والكنيسة أعلنت منذ سنوات رفضها لجميع الأسلحة النووية، ولا شك في ذلك».
لقاء مخفوف بالخلافات
ومن المتوقع أن يتناول اللقاء ملفات عدة، من بينها قضايا الحرية الدينية حول العالم، إضافة إلى الوضع في كوبا، بحسب ما أعلنه روبيو خلال مؤتمر صحفي في البيت الأبيض.
ووصف السفير الأمريكي لدى الفاتيكان، براين بورش، الاجتماع المرتقب بأنه سيكون صريحًا، في إشارة إلى حجم الخلافات السياسية القائمة بين الجانبين.
ويأتي اللقاء في وقت أصبح فيه البابا ليو أكثر حضورًا على الساحة الدولية، حيث أثار جدلًا واسعًا خلال جولته الإفريقية الأخيرة عندما تحدث عن عالم تمزقه حفنة من الطغاة، قبل أن يوضح لاحقًا أن تصريحاته لم تكن موجهة مباشرة إلى ترمب.
ومن المنتظر أن يواصل روبيو زيارته إلى روما لمدة يومين، تشمل أيضًا لقاء مع رئيسة الوزراء الإيطالية جورجيا ميلوني، التي سبق أن دافعت عن البابا في مواجهة انتقادات ترمب، فيما حذر وزير دفاعها من أن الحرب على إيران قد تهدد مكانة القيادة الأمريكية عالميًا.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is preparing to meet with Pope Leo at the Vatican today (Thursday) in a meeting expected to have sensitive atmospheres, following the sharp criticisms recently directed by U.S. President Donald Trump at the Pope regarding his stance on the war with Iran.
Rubio, who also serves as the U.S. National Security Advisor, is scheduled to arrive at the Vatican's Apostolic Palace on Thursday morning, marking the first meeting between the Pope and an official from the Trump administration in nearly a year.
According to Reuters, diplomatic sources reported that the closed-door meeting will last about half an hour, followed by another meeting between Rubio and Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican's top diplomatic official.
Escalating Disputes Between Trump and the Pope
Pope Leo, the first American Pope in the history of the Catholic Church, is known for his critical stance on the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran, as well as his opposition to the strict immigration policies adopted by the Trump administration.
In recent weeks, Trump has intensified his public attacks against the Pope, a move that has drawn widespread criticism from religious leaders and Christians across various political spectrums.
The U.S. President stated on Monday that the Pope is putting many Catholics at risk due to his opposition to the war, and he indirectly accused him of being lenient towards Iran's possession of nuclear weapons.
However, Pope Leo strongly denied these accusations, asserting that his message is based on a call for peace and a firm rejection of nuclear weapons.
The Pope told reporters: "The mission of the Church is to call for peace, and the Church has declared for years its rejection of all nuclear weapons, and there is no doubt about that."
A Meeting Fraught with Disputes
The meeting is expected to address several issues, including religious freedom around the world, as well as the situation in Cuba, according to what Rubio announced during a press conference at the White House.
The U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican, Brian Burch, described the upcoming meeting as being candid, referring to the extent of the political disagreements between the two sides.
The meeting comes at a time when Pope Leo has become more prominent on the international stage, having sparked widespread controversy during his recent African tour when he spoke about a world torn apart by a handful of tyrants, before later clarifying that his statements were not directed specifically at Trump.
Rubio is expected to continue his visit to Rome for two days, which will also include a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who has previously defended the Pope in the face of Trump's criticisms, while her Defense Minister warned that the war against Iran could threaten America's global leadership position.
