أعلنت المنظمة الدولية للهجرة، التابعة للأمم المتحدة، أن 53 شخصًا لقوا حتفهم أو فُقدوا إثر غرق قارب كان يقل مهاجرين في البحر المتوسط قبالة الساحل الليبي، مؤكدة إنقاذ ناجيتين فقط من الحادثة.
وقالت المنظمة إن القارب انقلب شمال مدينة زوارة غرب ليبيا، الجمعة، أثناء محاولته عبور البحر نحو أوروبا.
وأضافت في بيان أن امرأتين نيجيريتين فقط تم إنقاذهما خلال عملية بحث وإنقاذ نفذتها السلطات الليبية، موضحة أن إحدى الناجيتين أفادت بفقدان زوجها، فيما قالت الأخرى إنها فقدت طفليها في المأساة.
وأشارت المنظمة إلى أن فرقها قدمت رعاية طبية طارئة للناجيتين فور إنقاذهما.
تفاصيل الرحلة
وبحسب إفادات الناجيتين، أبحر القارب الذي كان يقل مهاجرين ولاجئين من جنسيات أفريقية من مدينة الزاوية الليبية قرابة الساعة الـ11 ليلًا في الخامس من فبراير، وبعد نحو 6 ساعات من الإبحار بدأت المياه تتسرب إلى القارب قبل أن ينقلب.
وقالت المنظمة: «تنعى المنظمة الدولية للهجرة فقدان الأرواح في حادثة مأساوية جديدة على طريق وسط البحر المتوسط».
تحذير من شبكات التهريب
وأكدت الوكالة الأممية، التي تتخذ من جنيف مقرًا لها، أن شبكات الاتجار بالبشر وتهريب المهاجرين تواصل استغلال الراغبين في الهجرة على الطريق الممتد من شمال أفريقيا إلى جنوب أوروبا، محققة أرباحًا من رحلات خطرة على متن قوارب غير صالحة للإبحار، ومعرّضة المهاجرين لـ«انتهاكات جسيمة».
ودعت المنظمة إلى تعزيز التعاون الدولي لمكافحة هذه الشبكات، بالتوازي مع توفير مسارات هجرة آمنة ومنظمة، للحد من المخاطر وإنقاذ الأرواح.
The International Organization for Migration, part of the United Nations, announced that 53 people have died or gone missing after a boat carrying migrants sank in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Libya, confirming that only two survivors were rescued from the incident.
The organization stated that the boat capsized north of the city of Zuwara in western Libya on Friday while attempting to cross the sea towards Europe.
It added in a statement that only two Nigerian women were rescued during a search and rescue operation carried out by Libyan authorities, explaining that one of the survivors reported losing her husband, while the other said she lost her two children in the tragedy.
The organization noted that its teams provided emergency medical care to the survivors immediately after their rescue.
Details of the Journey
According to the survivors' accounts, the boat carrying migrants and refugees of African nationalities departed from the Libyan city of Zawiya around 11 PM on February 5, and after about 6 hours of sailing, water began to seep into the boat before it capsized.
The organization stated: "The International Organization for Migration mourns the loss of lives in yet another tragic incident on the Central Mediterranean route."
Warning Against Smuggling Networks
The UN agency, headquartered in Geneva, confirmed that human trafficking and migrant smuggling networks continue to exploit those wishing to migrate along the route from North Africa to Southern Europe, profiting from dangerous journeys on unseaworthy boats, exposing migrants to "serious violations."
The organization called for enhanced international cooperation to combat these networks, alongside providing safe and organized migration pathways to reduce risks and save lives.
