حذر وزير الخزانة الأمريكي سكوت بيسنت الأوروبيين من غضب الرئيس دونالد ترمب، داعياً إياهم إلى تفادي أي رد فعل «غاضب» والجلوس معه في منتدى دافوس للاستماع إلى حججه بشأن ضم جزيرة غرينلاند.

وقال بيسنت للصحفيين قبل ساعات من وصول ترمب إلى الاجتماع السنوي للمنتدى الاقتصادي العالمي في سويسرا، اليوم (الأربعاء): «أقول للجميع.. خذوا نفساً عميقاً.. وتجنبوا الانسياق الذي رأيناه نحو ردود الفعل الغاضبة ولا تدعوا هذه المرارة تتسلل إليكم».

وتساءل وزير الخزانة: «لماذا لا تجلسون وتنتظرون وصول الرئيس ترمب وتستمعون إلى حججه؟».

وقال بيسنت إن الدنمارك باعت أراضي في منطقة البحر الكاريبي للولايات المتحدة عام 1917، أعيدت تسميتها بالجزر العذراء الأمريكية، مضيفاً أن الدنمارك التي التزمت الحياد خلال الحرب العالمية الأولى «أدركت حينها أهمية جزر العذراء الأمريكية.. فقد كانت قلقة بشأن التداعيات الألمانية، وما إذا امتدت الحرب إلى منطقة الكاريبي، وكانت الولايات المتحدة بحاجة ماسة إلى هذه الجزر».

من جانبها، اعتبرت رئيسة المفوضية الأوروبية أورسولا فون دير لاين أن «الخلافات بين الحلفاء بشأن غرينلاند تفيد خصومنا». ودعت الاتحاد الأوروبي إلى التخلي عن حذره التقليدي في عالم تسوده القوة الفجّة.

ودعت فرنسا في وقت سابق حلف شمال الأطلسي إلى إجراء مناورات عسكرية في غرينلاند، وأعلنت استعدادها للمشاركة فيها.

وكانت الدول الأوروبية التي استهدفها تهديد ترمب بفرض رسوم جمركية بسبب معارضتها خطته ضم غرينلاند، أكدت، الأحد الماضي، وحدة موقفها حيال تلك المسألة. وقالت بريطانيا والدنمارك وفنلندا وفرنسا وألمانيا وهولندا والنرويج والسويد، في بيان مشترك، إن «التهديدات بفرض رسوم جمركية تقوض العلاقات عبر الأطلسي وتنذر بتدهور خطير».

ووصف العديد من القادة الأوروبيين، بينهم الرئيس الفرنسي إيمانويل ماكرون ورئيس الوزراء النرويجي جوناس غار ستور، تهديدات ترمب بـ«غير المقبولة».

ورفض الاتحاد الأوروبي ضم الولايات المتحدة للجزيرة القطبية التابعة للدنمارك أو التهديد بالرسوم، محذراً من «دوامة خطيرة».

وأرسلت فرنسا والسويد وألمانيا والنرويج وهولندا وفنلندا وسلوفينيا وبريطانيا عسكريين إلى غرينلاند في مهمة استطلاع كجزء من تدريب نظمته الدنمارك مع دول في حلف شمال الأطلسي.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Pisent warned Europeans about President Donald Trump's anger, urging them to avoid any "angry" reactions and to sit down with him at the Davos forum to hear his arguments regarding the annexation of Greenland.

Pisent told reporters hours before Trump's arrival at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Switzerland today (Wednesday): "I say to everyone... take a deep breath... and avoid the drift we've seen towards angry reactions and don't let this bitterness creep in."

The Treasury Secretary questioned: "Why don't you sit and wait for President Trump to arrive and listen to his arguments?"

Pisent noted that Denmark sold land in the Caribbean to the United States in 1917, which was renamed the U.S. Virgin Islands, adding that Denmark, which maintained neutrality during World War I, "realized at that time the importance of the U.S. Virgin Islands... it was concerned about the German implications and whether the war would extend to the Caribbean, and the United States was in desperate need of these islands."

For her part, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen considered that "the disagreements among allies regarding Greenland benefit our adversaries." She called on the European Union to abandon its traditional caution in a world dominated by brute force.

Earlier, France called on NATO to conduct military maneuvers in Greenland and announced its readiness to participate.

The European countries targeted by Trump's threat to impose tariffs due to their opposition to his plan to annex Greenland confirmed last Sunday their unified stance on the matter. Britain, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden stated in a joint statement that "the threats of imposing tariffs undermine transatlantic relations and herald serious deterioration."

Many European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, described Trump's threats as "unacceptable."

The European Union rejected the United States' annexation of the Danish-owned Arctic island or the threat of tariffs, warning of a "dangerous spiral."

France, Sweden, Germany, Norway, the Netherlands, Finland, Slovenia, and Britain sent military personnel to Greenland on a reconnaissance mission as part of training organized by Denmark with NATO countries.
