وسط قلق أوروبي، هاجم الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب اليوم (الثلاثاء)، حلف شمال الأطلسي (الناتو).

وقال ترمب إن الحلف ما كان ليستمر لولا دوره وقيادته، معتبراً أنه قدّم للحلف ما لم يقدّمه أي رئيس أمريكي سابق.

وأوضح ترمب أن غيابه «كان سيؤدي إلى انتهاء وجود الناتو ودخوله مزبلة التاريخ»، مبيناً أن تدخله «كان حاسماً في بقاء الحلف واستمراره».

ووصف ترمب تدخلاته في بقاء الحلف بـ«الحقيقة المؤسفة لكنها صحيحة».

ويعود التوتر بين الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب وحلف شمال الأطلسي إلى ولايته الرئاسية الأولى (2017–2021)، حين وجّه انتقادات متكررة للحلف وقال إن «الولايات المتحدة تتحمّل العبء الأكبر من كلفته العسكرية، بينما لا تلتزم دول أوروبية عدة بنسبة الإنفاق الدفاعي المتفق عليها، والمحددة بـ2% من الناتج المحلي الإجمالي».

ولوّح ترمب أكثر من مرة بإمكانية تقليص الالتزام الأمريكي تجاه «الناتو»، بل وطرح تساؤلات علنية حول جدوى استمرار الولايات المتحدة في الدفاع عن دول «لا تدفع حصتها»، وهو ما زاد من حالة القلق الأوروبي.

Amid European concern, U.S. President Donald Trump attacked NATO (the North Atlantic Treaty Organization) today (Tuesday).

Trump stated that the alliance would not have lasted without his role and leadership, asserting that he has provided the alliance with what no previous U.S. president has offered.

He clarified that his absence "would have led to the end of NATO's existence and its entry into the dustbin of history," indicating that his intervention "was crucial for the alliance's survival and continuity."

Trump described his interventions in the alliance's survival as "an unfortunate but true fact."

The tension between U.S. President Donald Trump and NATO dates back to his first presidential term (2017–2021), when he repeatedly criticized the alliance and stated that "the United States bears the largest burden of its military costs, while several European countries do not meet the agreed-upon defense spending level of 2% of GDP."

Trump has hinted multiple times at the possibility of reducing U.S. commitment to NATO, even raising public questions about the usefulness of the United States continuing to defend countries "that do not pay their share," which has heightened European anxiety.
